It might sound radical and like the last thing you would want to do to your plants, but overwintering is a great way to put your delicate plants through the winter without, well, putting them through the winter! Here are some excellent tips on overwintering your delicate plants!
Overwintering your plants is helpful during the winter season
What is Overwintering?
Overwintering is the process of tricking your delicate plants into thinking that they are experiencing winter without leaving them outside. Instead, you put your plants in a controlled environment and can determine how much light, water, fertilizer, and frost your delicate plants experience. As a result, your plants get to go through the natural season of winter without being killed off or destroyed. Don’t worry, overwintering sounds much more complicated than it is.
Are Your Plants Healthy?
Before you determine whether or not overwintering your delicate plants is appropriate, determine if they are healthy and happy. If they are healthy, they have a much better chance of living through the winter. Do they have any pests that are currently preying on them? Get rid of all pests before your delicate plants go dormant, otherwise they will be back with a vengeance at the first sign of spring and do major harm to your plant.
Bundle Your Plants Up
Bundling up your plants is another important part of overwintering your plants. Apply mulch to your plants to help keep their roots healthy and to keep moisture below the surface. If you are looking for a way to use up some of the chopped leaves that you raked up, this is their time to shine! In addition to adding mulch to the bases, add frost shield bags or blankets to the plants to keep them from getting the worst of the winter weather. Make sure that they provide some degree of insulation so that the plants won’t freeze on the inside and suffer greater damage.
