September is here, which means the days are getting cooler and winter is right around the corner. The weather is getting pretty cold pretty quickly and your garden needs your undivided attention. The fruits and vegetables you planted last spring are cropping in abundance and with just a little preparation you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers next year.
So what should you be doing to prepare your garden for winter? Take a look…
1. Harvest and Store any Fruits and Vegetables
2. Remove Weeds and any Straggly Looking Annuals
3. Examine Your Shrubs: Cut away only dead or diseased areas. This is not the time for pruning.
4. Cut Back Perennials: Any perennials in your garden will need to be cut back to about six or eight inches in length.
5. Collect Seeds: Many gardeners will collect seeds from vegetables and flowers for planting the following year.
6. Mulch: To avoid damage from the harsh winter weather, protect your plants’ roots with mulch. This should be done after the first frost.
7. Plant Winter Flowering Plants: These include flowers like pansies, ornamental cabbages, wall flowers and primroses. These winter flowering plants stop the garden from looking so desolate during the cold winter months.
So get to work and make sure your garden is ready for the winter weather.
