Case Study – Marriottsville Residence

Faced with an aging wooden deck and deteriorating timber retaining walls, the Hawkins’ knew it was time to rehabilitate their rear yard.  The existing pool and concrete pool deck were in good shape, however, there was clearly a lack of usable space at the pool level.  In addition, the existing deck design served to provide mostly circulation space, with little entertaining room with views of the pool.

We began with an analysis of the existing site constraints and established the parameters of the work area.  The design concept quickly started to take shape.  Spaces were outlined for their potential for development and circulation patterns were realigned.  A new composite deck was designed to provide table space with vantages of the pool.  The circulation corridor was realigned to a less direct route.  With this, we were able to provide a landing between the deck and pool area to make it easier to negotiate the nearly six feet of elevation change.  A new interlocking concrete block wall was installed to increase the space around the pool.  A bench was even incorporated into this wall to provide additional seating.  New concrete was poured adjacent to the existing pool deck and both were sprayed with a concrete finish to achieve a uniform appearance.  The addition of landscaping and low voltage lighting finished off this remodel job.
