rhine landscaping water feature pool waterfall

Light up your waterfall for a more natural look.

If you have gorgeous landscaping in your backyard you may like to enjoy that space in the evening as well. Luckily there is a wide variety of different lighting styles that can blend seamlessly with your backyard design, from pool decks to a perfectly lit garden. If you’re beginning to plan your backyard landscaping for warmer months, these ideas can help you design the perfect outdoor living area.

Pathway Lighting

Lighting along the pathways in your landscaping can enhance your space by creating stylish boundaries and guiding your guests through your beautiful garden or driveway. This type of lighting in particular gives you even more opportunities to mix and match your lighting styles for an eclectic look in your outdoor space. Keep in mind that less is more, and a little light can go a long way with accessorizing your landscape throughout the year.

Natural Lighting

If you have several older trees in your backyard, consider moon lighting for your design. Moon lighting mimics the look of natural moonlight by placing light fixtures higher up in trees, usually about 30-40 feet, so that the lighting fixtures are hidden from the ground. Using these types of lights can eliminate the need for path lighting in some areas as well.

Lighting with Water

If you have water features in your yard, you can get creative with how you design your lights by incorporating the water as your lighting accessory. For an especially unique look, consider up-lighting your waterfall by installing lights under the water, which will make the water glow at night. You can also down-light your waterfall for a more natural look.

Lighting in your Hardscaping

Hardscaping can be a beautiful and functional part of your backyard, but it’s no fun without the lights at night! If you’re looking for some creative lighting, consider using LED tape as an adhesive under canaliever edges or under countertops on your outdoor kitchen. (Keep in mind LED tape needs to be supported by clips!) If you do not have hardscaping installed yet, consider built-in lights and motion-sensors for your lighting needs.
